Silent Scream

Post Sun Nov 20, 2005 2:01 am

When did Shane write this song? Was he with the Popes? And is it me, or does his voice sound different in this song? I mean, it's the same Shane, but there's a difference to it.

I have it on the Earthrise II compilation CD, "artists for the environment", 1995.

info is as follows:

Shane MacGowan
Silent Scream
S. MacGowan / K. Young / F. Lautieri
BMG Music, Fats Coco Music
copyright 1995 ELF Records
Produced by Kenny Young and Franco Lautieri

As for his voice, there is another voice behind his at times (the scream), along with what sounds like a fiddle in the music, which is very well produced. It's a somewhat different background for his voice.

I like it a lot.

I'll have to agree with you on that. Great lyrics.

It's nice to sit by the river side
in the merry month of June
and hear the angels sing in the trees
all God's favorite tunes

As the broad majestic Shannon
comes rumbling round the bend
Big lazy two-hearted river
with no beginning and no end

It's nice to sit and ponder
the joys of Glenaveigh
around the Carney Commons
as the wind sings to the trees

Singing the songs of ages
of love and liberty
songs of hope and happiness
of the young and of the free

Last night I had a dream
Last night I had a dream
that the fields were ash
and the rain was black
and I screamed a silent scream
ahhhhhhhhhhhh......

It seems I was the only thing
that there was left alive
but as I hung my head and cried
a jet flew through the sky

I went to see my friends that
I drank with in the town
but there was nothing there at all
it was all razed to the ground

But the wind was gone and so was
the angels gently sigh
and as the day time turned to night
I stared at the starless sky

Last night I had a dream
Last night I had a dream
that the fields were ash
and the rain was black
and I screamed a silent scream
ahhhhhhhhhhhh......

It surely is. And it is a shame that the only way it can be gotten presently is through a bootleg or tracking down an old copy of Earthrise II.

silent scream altered voice

Given the time period that song was recorded you can tell that Shane's voice was artificially raised in pitch on the recording, making him sound like his old self. Either that or he sucked down some helium beforehand!

Good point Jim. That is evident also on his recording of My Way. Even more so.

Was this done by The Pogues or was it done after Shane left the band?

This was done well after he and The Pogues parted ways.

She said DATA, not DATE, Niall a chara. As in a fact (datum), not a diurnal time-unit.

I better won't mention that in Czech "datum" means "date" - to avoid further confusion. ;) Yep, I meant facts - but I can narrow it down to "October 1995" (if i-net sources are to be believed) so that there are only 31 dates to choose from. :)
