I've always wondered why Terry let loose a profanity (or something that sounds quite like a profanity) at the end of South Australia? Anyone know the story behind this? Mr. C?

Nope. Probably a string broke. It's a bugger having to change strings when the band is on a bit of a roll, and a broken string more or less guarantees there will be another take, however good that one was. But it may also be that the broken string will not prevent that take becoming "the one" in which case you'll have to overdub your part anyway, which is never quite as much fun or as confidently played as when you're in there with the ensemble.

Is that really true? The answer part sounds exactly like Spider to me...

It is Spider. Who, don't forget, was originally meant to be the band's lead singer...

Yes. Sorry. It was Sea Shanty.
What kind of fuckery is this?

I think it's the other way round. Spider sings then the answer part is Shane.

You're right. That's what I meant, but I forgot Spider had the first line. I always think of his as the answer part because Shane's normally the lead singer, which is a bit unfair of me I suppose.

I think it's a great song. Lyrically, it's right up with Shane's best work. There are so many great lines, my favourite being, "the very trees seemed to bend and stare".

Jesus Christ are you fuckin' deaf ? IT IS the same singer on The recruiting sergeant, Young Ned of the hill and South Australia. It is Terry Woods, member of The Pogues. He also sings his own fuckin' song Streets of sorrow and Gartloney rats, Tombstones, Rainbow man, Every man is a king. Shane and Spider DO share the vocals on Down in the ground... and I never heard that Spider was supposed to be originally the lead singer. Never fuckin' heard that. He played tin whistle from even before the Pogues as far as I know and Shane played probably a very ropey guitar. End of.

No, it is actually true that Spider was supposed to be the lead singer. Mind you, so, briefly, was Cush, the Man They Still Can't Hang.

What is the name of the drummer who played the drums before andrew? I think he was only a short time drummer for Pogue Mahone / the Pogues.

John Grinton (Grinny)? I don't know if he was ever in the Pogues but he was one of the many line ups for the Nips.
