March 9 2008, Washington DC

Post Mon Mar 10, 2008 11:09 am

Great show. The boys were prompt - came on @ 9:25 (scheduled for 9:15) and every song was played well. Shane was upright and (relatively) coherent. Arrived 2/3ds into the opening act (Urban Voodo Machine) and they were REALLY good. A fine band to start the night. Thanks Spider for inviting them. I got invited backstage by the singer of UVM and after hanging with them for a while, spent a few minutes chatting with Spider, Shane and James. Missed you, Philip, but I was told you went straight back to the hotel to rest. I understand and was very glad you were there for the show - 1000s was fantastic. Tuesday Mornig was as well - great job, Spider. And a great preformance of Star of the County Down by Andrew. Shane was in fine form, not drinking to impress the audience - no bottle nor constant cups in hand while singing. I don't believe I saw him smoke onstage either, respecting the nonsmoking venue (go figure).

Set list (acording to the list I came home with - don't believe there were any variations):

STREAMS
FALL
TURKISH
BROWN EYES
DARK STREETS
TUESDAY
SAYONARA
KITTY
SUNNYSIDE
REPEAL
BODY
BOYS
LOVE YOU TIL THE END
1000'S
GREEN LAND
DIRTY OLD TOWN
BOTTLE
SICKBED
----------------
SALLY
RAINY NIGHT
DOG
----------------
STAR
POOR PADDY
FIESTA

See you all in Baltimore...

Finally a set list. Thank you. Thank you.

Good show. I was able to unload the two tickets I got stuck with, but for a 50% loss. That's ok.

Early on, before teh shows, there was a drunk guy there by himself, also named Eric.....he was a prick and wanted to be my buddy, so I got the hell out of there for a while. Last thing I need is drunken Eric spilling his G&T all over me or worse. So, as I'm outside selling my tickets this guy is brought outside by the security staff. He's all "but I just want to watch the show" ..."what's the problem?!" .... and then to my surprise, they cook up this story about how he bought weed just around the corner and there was officer friendly ready to talk to the guy. Frankly I think he was framed. But again, he was being a drunken prick.

Urban Voodoo Machine was interesting. At first I can't say I liked them a whole lot, but they grew on me, and by the time they left the stage I'd say they had the crowd in front of the stage, and I liked them enough to want to see them again sometime. Most of the Pogues came out to the side stage balcony to see about half of their set. They were either appreciating the talent, or giving them the old "hey isn't it about time you guys were clearing out!??" -- I think it was the former.

The Pogues were great, as usual. The crowd was fairly mellow, but clapped and yelled and sang, and a few people jumped around a little. I was a few people away from the front rail, in front of Spider. Thought of shouting out to Philip, but figured he wouldn't hear me anyway. You have read the set list. There were a bunch of people making "jokes" about how drunk Shane was. They all yucked it up, but when they called out a few remarks to the stage I felt embarrassed. I got out of the front ranks during Rainy Night in Soho. Paddy and Fiesta were fun, fun, fun ... Bought one of the new map theme tour shirts. Quite nice. Ended up riding the metro back with a small group of people from the show. See you in B'more. :D
What kind of fuckery is this?

Still no Young Ned of the Hill (a standout performance when I saw them in 2006 in Atlantic City), come on Terry, at least substitute it with Gartloney Rats (I would love to here that one live.) I wish they would dust off London You're a Lady and Sea Shanty. Oh well, fingers crossed.

I was wondering why Ned has been left off the setlist, (I think) 2007 XMas and now the 2008 tour? Is
there an issue with Terry's voice? IMO, the Ned is the best song on P&L. Since the reunion, it seems
everyone is given the chance to do "their" most noted song-Mr. Chevron, Spider, Andrew-so why the change
for Terry? (I would love to hear Everyman is a King if we can subsitute).

The featured spots you refer to - Thousands, Tuesday Morning, Star of the County Down etc, were not actually designed as such, that's just the way the set fell out, more or less. Terry has been trying to drop "Young Ned Of The Hill" for years. I think he does have some minor issue with his voice, yes. I miss "Ned" too and hope it is only being rested, not dropped.

We were in the very front, between Shane and Spider. Our two daughters, aged 19 and 13, were with us. Thank you for putting on such a wonderful show. Anne, the 13-year-old, was disappointed at no Young Ned of the Hill, but Sickbed, Star of the County Down, Bottle of Smoke and Irish Rover are other great favorites of hers and nothing could have made her more wide-eyed with amazement than to see and hear them played by fellows standing not ten feet from her. I do hope she doesn't try Spider's beer tray trick in her school cafeteria, though. This is the second DC show we're seen (also went in 2006) and we'll keep going back as long as you keep touring.

And best wishes and regards to Phil Chevron for continued recovery and good health -- I'm pretty sure I was not the only person in the audience who misted over during Thousands are Sailing.

Update: My husband has posted some photos:

http://flickr.com/photos/wastrel/2323623620/

and forward from there. I'm sure there will be more in the next few days; he shot about 700 frames.

As always, thank you for the quick and informative reply. Please let Terry know that we miss the song
and hope his voice is better. Nothing like be able to scream "May you burn in Hell tonight" out loud in public!

Also, it is great to say that we will see you in about a week!!!

Terrific show. Shane was in great form, singing extremely well and actually bantering with the audience and Spider like the good old days. Very moved by Mr. Chevron's recovery, appearance and 1000s performance. We tried to meet him afterward but it was clear my buddy was going to fight someone or get arrested if we stayed out on the sidewalk much longer.
I have to say though, the banjo player looked like he would rather be doing anything other than playing that show.

On another thread Green Folkal said that Broad Majestic Shannon was played on the 10th then went on to post "*EDIT*-The set list from the 9th was the exact same as tonight.". So my question is has BMS been played or not? Philip has been great about clarifying the set lists in the past however I have not seen many posts from him during this tour. He has been a good boy and getting his rest I presume.

BMS was played both nights, I believe--and towards the beginning of the set. As everyone there can attest, both nights were incredible.

Broad Majestic was the third number both nights, just before Turkish.

The show was the same in Chicago as it was in DC (above) except that the segment from "Body" to "Greenland" was in a different order.

Ah, that's good news. Although I'm not one to piss & moan about setlists ("damn, they didn't do 'Worms'!"), 'The Broad Majestic Shannon' has always been a personal favorite.

Wow...24 hrs from now I'll be leaving work and heading for Baltimore!

I'll go ahead and be one to piss and moan about setlists then!

I'm bummed Transmetropolitan was dropped. Shane was >this< close to getting the words right. I know it didn't quite work because he didn't rehearse or whatever, and that's fine, but it's one of my favorite Pogues songs ever and I was kinda hoping it would get in polished live rotation again at some point. And it's not like it's an unpopular tune - it's the first track on the first album, so it's not like I'm clamoring for How Come? to enter the sets.

Loved the show but I HATE the 9:30 club. There are many better venues in the DC area that the band could play.
