V Festival 2008

Post Sun Aug 17, 2008 12:17 am

I watched the coverage of the V festival on 4music today and waited and waited and waited, expecting to not see any Pogues coverage, but was mildly surprised.

They actually played two songs, could not believe it, I was upstairs on the toilet at the time and my partner Jake turned up the volume to let me know that they were on. Rainy Night In Soho was the first, followed by Dirty Old Town.

Rainy Night(my second fave song of all time) just sounded excellent, there was a full brass section and Spider's whistle was just fantastic and as for Dirty Old Town, who could fault it.

I could not hear the guitar and I could not see a guitarist, and eventually worked out that there wasn't one (I knew from reading this forum Phil couldn't make it due to ongoing problems caused by the effects of the chemo (correct me if I'm wrong) but that did not matter, the sound was just spot on and it was a brilliant performance.

Wish I could write a better review but it is way past bedtime and I've had a few to drink, being Saturday and all that, I did actually plan a better review, but hey ho!! Nighty night.

I didn't bother watching as I expected to be disapointed but after hearing this I'll have to look on youtube.

Channel 4 tonight aired the Irish Rover from V.
No guitar as mentioned above. Sound a bit muted and great distance between stage and audience.
Felt that the whistke was too loud and coverage didnt catch the atmosphere.

Why is it always dirty old ton or irish rover that gets coverage at these festivals? Why not original material. Ok, Soho made an appearance i beleive, but I know the band probably have a say in what songs can be broadcast. Is it a royalty thing? Air a trad song and split the royalties?

To be honest, It was a poor enough performance. Missing guitar for depth.

By the way, Shane had his arm in a sling.

Great to see them billed on the festival coverage, to a massive audince, but poor choice of songs. Why not Sick Bed.....Streams.... etc

Sounds like the lads do too! Cool "Rainy Night" though. My contribution to that is more.........delicate, so less readily missed.

Why was there no one in there to replace you this time round Phil?

Turns out I'm irreplaceable. Go figure.

No, James W was not available.

I'll second that.

Your abilities with the guitar are nothing to sneeze at as well.
