I don't know why he likes it that way but, well, he likes it that way. It's gotten to the point where Ian has literally no lights focussed on him at all and
still he complains.
It is a little known fact that the true reason that the spotlight never illuminates the singer is because it is not in fact Shane MacGowan fronting the band these days, instead his place is actually filled by one of either Aled Jones, Ray Dorset (formerly of Mungo Jerry) or the ghost of the late Dame Edith Sitwell. This was also the reason for the band being late taking the stage for the Newcastle gig, all three singers are traveling with the band but a roster mix up meant that each of them believed it was their night off and only realised that an error had occurred when they all bumped into each other having gone to see the panto at the Theatre Royal.
If you find this a little hard to believe then here is the irrefutable evidence, it is only the ghost of the late Dame Edith Sitwell who can remember the correct sequence of events of the first world war, this is why the verses of "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" are only sung in the right order on about one in three shows.
I ain't doin' no deal with the devil until he starts a loyalty card scheme.
