Personally I like the change. I think they need to make more of Midtown pedestrian only.

No, I witnessed the ill-judged pedestrianisation of the Square earlier this year. In fact, I was in New York the very first day it happened and was horrified to find the place automatically turn into the New Year's Eve version of itself. A native explained to me that it's a bad idea because ultimately it's about raising rents and real estate values in the area and that Bloomberg has ulterior motives entirely unconnected to the well-being of either New Yorkers or tourists, but I can't remember the full thrust of that argument so I won't attempt to paraphrase it.
Besides, it just looks silly.

"Tonight is a very special night for myself and Dan - tonight we got through a performance for the first time without somebody's cellphone going off!"

Not even Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig are immune from the epidemic of bad manners currently infesting audiences on both the West End and Broadway. But they rise above it nightly to auction off their undershirts in the cause of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the charity which takes up collections twice a year in all Broadway theatres. Tonight, the "wife-beaters" raise $20,000.

The play itself - a two hander in which they play a pair of Chicago cops, one Irish (Craig) the other Italian, who've been best friends since childhood and whose bond is now severely compromised by a chain of events which occur in the line of duty - is fairly slight though undeniably compelling, and will probably make a better movie if, as is widely believed, that is the goal. It asks fairly predictable questions about loyalty, love, friendship and moral courage, but it lacks the added theatrical undertow and linguistic athleticism which so distinguishes the two-handers of, say, Mark O'Rowe; still, the performances, directed by Corkman John Crowley (whose next Broadway job is the new Martin McDonagh play in February) are fine enough, especially from Jackman, who is something of a Broadway superstar since he won his Tony for the musical The Boy From Oz a few years back.
The scenic (Scott Pask) and lighting designs (Hugh Vanstone) are both considerably above par.

Actually he's been told off in the wrong manner: Paddy O'Brien said Dickinson penalized the All Blacks while it was the Italian scrum that was sistematically committing offences. It's a shame, because in fact the All Blacks were under pressure at the scrum and committed repeated professional fouls which should've let to a penalty try or to several yellow cards.

I think O'Brien wanted to put pressure on England: New Zealand fear their scrummage and O'Brien made them know they will not have the chance to destroy the NZL scrum...

(too tired to explain myself properly)
Brian Moore (by the way despite him being English and me being Welsh if i could be like any hooker (of the rugby variety) in the World, i'd love to have been like him!) stated that he reckoned the IRB had changed the way rugby was reffed because of the way England won the World cup in 2003!
Article in the Telegraph.
And so to the weekend!
It would not surprise me if that England team bogged down New Zealand and either got a result or had a close game.
Scotland: Will play with spirit and will lose with honour.
Wales: If we can hold our scrummaging line, we will win, but can we after last Friday (I had the same shoulder operation as Adam Jones back in 1995, getting my coordination back was a lot of hard work!)
Ireland: Will win quite convincingly against Fiji.
Italy: I think you'll have Samoa.
Perhaps, though his statement may have carried more weight, even made a difference, if he had made it before UEFA and FIFA ruled that the game would not be replayed. You also have to wonder how "instinctive" your reaction could be when you're 32 years old, have been a top ranking professional footballer half your life and you handle the ball not once (for which lesser players have not had the benefit of the doubt) but twice!

After the behaviour of their legions of fans at their recent Dublin reunion show - loutishness, drunkenness, throwing up, general henpartyness - we would not wish to encourage a Nolan Sisters element at our gigs.
It's not in Henry's gift to "tell" the referee to reverse any of his decisions, though it sometimes seems that way with these primping peacocks. Though Henry's handball infringement is now beyond dispute - it is accepted by all parties - ultimately the decision was a refereeing error. I notice that the incident is now appearing on news networks here in the USA (CNN Headline News had it this morning) and frankly, France and Henry are the long term losers in this. Meanwhile, Ireland can add yet another "moral victory" to their legend.

Re: Football forever

Mike from Boston wrote:I mean if Henry lets the ball go, it goes out of bounds. If he uses his hand and gets away with it, well... But if he gets caught what happens?

Well, in theory it should've been regarded as a case of deliberate handball, which should merit a yellow card for the offending player and a free kick against his team.

Reasons for the specific outrage against Henry specifically in this case? Partly because of who he is: captain of the national team, and someone who's carefully built up a reputation for being one of the sport's "good guys", which has added to his marketability. Although if you look back over his career there have been a fair few blemishes there actually. And the way in which he obviously knew he'd done wrong, but couldn't quite manage to admit it until too late...

There are things that you can get away with in sport when there aren't a whole load of cameras trained on you. Although in fact he did get away with it in this case, didn't he?
