Re: What Movie Are You Watching Or Watched Today?

Seven Days In May (John Frankenheimer, 1963)

Made with the cooperation of the Kennedy White House, fans of the novel upon which the movie was based, John "Manchurian Candidate" Frankenheimer's Cold War thriller boasts a superb screenplay by Rod Serling, one of those scripts of such elegance and density that it would struggle to get made today, along with really fine performances from Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Ava Gardner, Edmond O'Brien and, in particular, Fredric March as the US President facing a military coup by one of his own four-star generals (Lancaster), a hawk who opposes the President's pacificist instincts (in the shape of a nuclear treaty with the Soviets with mutual commitments to disarmement) with every "patriotic" breath he draws.

I remember 1963 - just - and though the defining moment of the year would turn out to be the assassination of the POTUS rather than his military overthrow, it is not, I think, possible to overstate just how serious the threat of nuclear war was in that year of the Cuban missile crisis, or how much it engaged daily discourse. I was acutely aware, though only aged 6, and sufficiently accomplished at eavesdropping on adult-ears-only conversations, that my own parents agonized over whether I should be made aware of the imminent threat. I'm not sure how they broke the bad news to me or even if they did, but that's academic anyway as their deliberations had already made a profound impression on me about the fragility of the world, an impression compounded in November when the nice "Irish" president at whom I had waved a paper American flag in June that year, standing merely feet away from him as he received the adulation of the Dublin people from his open-top motorcade, was shot dead. That's the thing about us baby-boomers: for all the affluence and opportunity that is supposed to have come our way [this in itself questionable in still-impoverished DeValera Ireland], seldom can a generation, before or since, have so acutely awaited its own doom.

In any event, Frankenheimer's Hitchcockian movie neatly captures both the paranoia and counter-paranoia of the time. As the director points out in the accompanying commentary, Kirk Douglas's decision, as a US Army Colonel, to rat out his superior officer's treason to the President, was a momentous one in an America still reeling from McCarthyism and the Black List. The film is full of nuance like that, enriching an already stylish movie, beautifully shot - in sharp monochrome tones - with the elegant and eloquent wide-angle and low-slung cameras charactestic of the director's live television drama background. Amusingly too, though Frankenheimer sets his movie vaguely "in the future", the innovations he offers - video conferencing, smaller American cars, moving picture power-point presentations - all now somehow appear resolutely of their time. Brilliant though it is, forget Mad Men - this is 1963, right here.

firehazard wrote:I was bored by the Tudors pretty much from the beginning. (Those Tudors, eh?) Rome was thoroughly entertaining. Haven't seen Pillars, is it over these shores yet?

I enjoyed Rome. I liked that they broke up the typical "here's how the Royals live" story with their Rosencrantz & Guildenstern story line.

Seen tonight: The Limits of Control written and directed by Jim Jarmusch (who, I've just learned, was in Straight to Hell - Small little world, eh?).

This film was ... well ... it was. It was very nicely shot; I enjoyed the cinematography. I also enjoyed the soundtrack. And Bill Murray was kinda fun. The pacing was very slow though. We never learn, really, what the protagonist's job is (other than the obvious), or why he has to work so hard to gain the information to accomplish it, or the meaning of many of the symbols repeated throughout the film. We never learn who the co-conspirators are, or what motivates them. We never learn who killed the naked woman and left her in a bed for the protagonist to find.

In other words - this film could be thought of as a two hour "experience" rather than a two-hour story. It has a lot of style but not much substance. Or perhaps it's full of substance but my head, addled as it is by pop culture, is unable to decipher it.

I did notice a striking similarity between the alternating red/green boxer graphic on the matchbox covers and the boxer poster from the Pogues Fillmore show a few years back. I'm certain it's a coincidence, but I enjoyed it never-the-less.

Autograph tease

You love the Pogues, right? And you probably enjoy this web site from time to time too. And you'd just LOVE to have a completely unique something to show everyone how you love your favorite band AND know that you helped support this site*, right? RIGHT? Well, OK then. Let's instead assume you know someone who is a Pogues fanatic and collects all things Poguetry. You TOTALLY want to get this person a unique holiday tchotchke touched by the band, right? RIGHT? Yeah, that's what I thought! Note that you're especially in luck if this person is named Phil AND has a guitar!

Winging their way across the Atlantic even as I type this are these magnificent autographed 8" x 10" photos (and the group ones are bigger). And they'll be available for you to purchase soon! Start saving your quarters now so you can be the first to own the whole set!

The Sligo Referee

Here's a memory of Spider I'd like to share with ye all.

Back in 1989, The Pogues played The Reading Festival. This was preceeded by three dates in Ireland, one in Galway, one in Shinrone, and a third in Cork. I was at the Galway and Cork shows. Shane didn't exactly cover himself with glory at these two shows. To put it mildly, he was 'out to lunch'.

Anyway, the day before the 1st show Spider and some other Pogues were at the All-Ireland Gaelic Football semi-final between Dublin and Cork. I was at the game myself and Dublin, my team, were the victim of some poor refereeing decisions by an official from Sligo. I wasn't at Reading but heard a recording of the show. Just before 'Repeal', Spider broke in to song. To the tune of 'James Connolly' I think, he sang an original composition about the referee of the afore mentioned match. The lyrics were roughly as follows:

You can talk about Iscariot, Hitler, and the Tans,
How Pontius Pilate wiped the blood of Jaysus off his hands,
The SS, the Gestapo, and the bleedin' R.U.C.,
Not one of them's as treacherous as the Sligo Referee.

He did the dirty deed in Dublin City,
The place where all the girls are so pretty,
His crime is as old as history,
So what then was the fee?
Twenty pieces of silver,
Twenty pieces of silver,
Said the Sligo Referee!

At the end of 'Repeal', Shane referred to Spider as 'the Mozart of the blank generation'!

Happy memories indeed!

(Spider writing "I for once can't wait until it's all over", although that could have ment a particular tour rather than a whole sort of split up of the band...) but it could be a trick from the management as well, because more people tend to think "Well if it's the last tour they'll ever play, I have to see it..." let's just hope that it won't be the last one will be great anyway...last year was out of this world in London!

Sorry, no, no Manchester either or Sheffield. Not a very happy bunny because I won't get to see any of my friends from this forum, but these things happen. Looking at my possibilities I will more than likely only be going to Birmingham.

Re: What book are you reading?

"Working Girl Blues - The Life & Music of Hazel Dickens". A short (30 page) biography by Bill C. Malone, and another 60 with writing on & lyrics of the bulk of her songs.

Hazel doesn't exactly make the gossip columns, so it was interesting to get her story, and to read the origins on the songs. A lovely little read. Thing is, she's pretty much an open book. She really is a heartfelt songwriter: she is the working woman in her songs, she's the displaced hillbilly in the city, it's her own brother who died of black lung - so it's actually pretty clear where it's all coming from, generally. But some of the specific stories are still touching or eye-opening ("You'll Never Keep Us Down" being the only purpose-written, deadline song she's ever written, for the film "Harlan County, USA", for example).

If you love Hazel, you'll want to read this.
