WAY TO GO JOE

Former Clash frontman Joe Strummer will replace Shane MacGowan as the lead singer of the Pogues for the band's current North American tour. A press release from the great Irish group's New York publicist said the switch was "due to Shane's ill health." Strummer should have no problem at all getting up to speed. In '87, he replaced ailing Pogues guitarist Philip Chevron on tour and last year he produced the band's stunning "Hell's Ditch" album. The band is slated to hit the Warfield in San Francisco Oct. 7 and 8.
